Not only is it a food eaten naturally by many reptiles in the wild (particularly Mediterranean and desert species), but it is naturally high in moisture and so aids hydration. Opuntia also contains a very high level of Calcium, as well as having a great Calcium:Phosphorous ratio.
While some animals are more than happy to chew on a whole piece of prickly pear, it is often worth cutting into smaller chunks. When left uncut, a whole piece of leaf can remain in good edible condition for up to six months. This means that you can get fantastic value from this style of food.
Juvenile Pads are slightly smaller than the Mature and are softer, with the Mature being more fibrous.
